Powerful detached chords at the piano

When playing the piano itself, it is even more important to cushion the impact and release any pressure after sounding the note. Start by playing some staccato triads from a few centimetres above the keyboard, then gradually minimize the movement until it is initiated from the key surface. This concentrates the energy and saves time in faster passages: lifting the arm prior to this action can slow a whole passage down and also compromise the accuracy. A sudden impetus towards the keys, followed by instant release, is all that is required. Think of just overcoming the initial inertia of the keys rather than pushing into the keybed. The timing is important: you need to focus the maximum energy at the moment of sounding the note and then release it immediately afterwards. Do not practice forte initially – aim for mezzo-forte with a very fast impetus but quite a light touch.
